monsters creaturesMonsters and Water Beasts: Creatures of Fact or Fiction?
Karen Miller, illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier
2007, Henry Holt Childrens Books
97 pp.

Colorful book for 3-5th grade reading level. Includes mention of Bigfoot, Big Bird of Texas, Hoop Snakes, Mothman, Jersey Devil, Sea Maiden of Biloxi, Champ, The Sea Serpent of Gloucester, Cadborosaurus. The author states that these animals are so cool, they should exist, which is hardly a sound argument. Each section begins with vignette, using speculation as fact, and is a rehash of existing information. With a total lack of critical analysis, it muddles the line between truth and fantasy. The author does a disservice to kids with this presentation, portraying scientists in a positive light if they support existence of the creature and called cynical if they don’t. Not recommended.
