Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science – J. Meldrum

Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science
Jeff Meldrum
2006, Forge Books
304 pp

This book sprung from a Discovery Channel documentary, not exactly the best foundation for a serious book. Meldrum, a scientist, is averse to skepticism – a key feature of the scientific method, which is not a good trait for a scientist. Yet, Meldrum remains one of the few credentialled authorities on Sasquatch and assumes the role Grover Krantz once held in the field. He rejects all paranormal speculation and treats the creature as a zoological organism. It is a fair argument that he oversimplifies the cultural aspects of belief in Bigfoot.

After many years, the evidence presented in this book has not led to an expansion of higher quality evidence to suggest that the creature also known as Bigfoot is an unidentified primate. This book provides a solid view of the scientific examination of Sasquatch and, because it is so often referenced, is an essential for the cryptid library. But readers should be aware that the scientific content here has flaws, but the arguments are far better than a book of Bigfoot sighting reports.
